Ari Roland Quartet la Teatrul Anton Pann

Bassist Ari Roland needed a break. Five straight years of late-night gigs in New York had taken its toll. He also needed to resolve a dilemma. A student of the vast recorded library of bop horn players, Roland had translated its collective voice to the unwieldy double bass by developing his arco technique. Hunched over a shoulder of his instrument, Roland used the bow to improvise horn-like lines composed entirely of 16th notes, sometimes at extremely high tempos. Not only did Roland re-examine the merits of soloing in this fashion, but also the results.
